New defensive stat for injuries?

Now I know this will never actually happen and it would be purely be for fan enjoyment, but what if there was a new defensive stat for injuring players from the other team. You know you're proud of it (when your team takes someone out), especially when it is someone significant. You feel like other teams later in the season that don't have to deal with that injured player should be thanking your defense. Well we can always entertain our fantasies on here (not a euphemism) so here it goes:
  1. If injured player has to sit out for 1-3 weeks, your defense gets one point.
  2. If injured player has to sit out for 3-6 weeks, your defense gets two points.
  3. If injured player has to sit out for 6-10 weeks, your defense gets three points.
  4. If injured player has to sit out for 10-16 weeks, your defense gets four points.
Clearly this will NEVER be implicated, mainly because it's rude to the injured players, but it would be fun for us, the fans.

49ers 2010 season

Call me crazy, but I'm about to make some pretty bold predictions for the 49ers 2010 season. Ready? Here we go:

  1. They will be a top 5, possibly a top 3 defense: The run defense will be stellar, allowing under 90 ypg. Pass defense will still not be lights out but should be much improved from the 2009 season, I'm thinking top 15 maybe top 10.
  2. Now this prediction somewhat hinges on a non-controllable factor, but can still be likely without it happening. If Kurt Warner retires (handing the Cardinals QB duties to Matt Leinart) I guarantee a NFC West crown for the 49ers. Now if Warner decides to stay for one last season I can no longer "guarantee" the division, but I can give it as much as a 90% chance of happening. Leinart is significantly worse than Warner and will very much subdue the Cards potent pass first offense.
  3. This one I'm technically stealing borrowing from Trent Dilfer, but I totally agree with him, so I'll act like it's mine. The 49ers in 2009 were the best NFC team to not make the playoffs. I can easily see them being the Jets of this playoff season. With a solid defense and what I think will be an above average offense the 49ers will make the NFC Divisional round. I'm not so sure about the 1st round bye Dilfer talks about, but hey, I wouldn't be mad if it happened.
So there you have it, my 3 bold predictions for the 49ers in 2010. Any criticism or praises? Leave them in the comments!

Get to know the writer...

Looking back on it this probably should have been my first post... but oh well.

I am a Journalism Major currently attending Washington State University (WSU). I am writing for the Daily Evergreen in the sports section, if you want to read my stories here is a link to my writer profile. I've had the opportunity to interview the Seattle Sounders starting goalie, Kasey Keller. Soon I hope to be interviewing the Seattle Seahawks Craig Terill.

Ever since I can remember I've been a 49ers fan. During the regular season the Niners are pretty much my life.

Just recently I got into fell in love with MLB baseball. My favorite team is the Mariners, followed closely by the Giants (gotta love my Bay Area sports).

Being a Coug I just inherited a favorite college basketball and football team. After a long, tiresome, frustrating football season (1-win season) it looks like I have a fun basketball season to look forward too (14-5 currently).

Well that's it for now. Any questions you have, just ask.

King Felix Extension

The recent news about the Mariners and Felix Hernandez reaching an agreement on a contract extension made my day yesterday (possibly even my week, we'll see). This is great news for a few reasons:

  • The reported 5-year deal is absolutely perfect. Many had hoped for 6 years, but history generally shows us that ridiculously long contracts for pitchers usually don't work out. We get the King for 5 more years, and if for some terrible reason he falls apart or gets injured (God forbid), we don't have to hold on to him for a huge period of time.
  • I'm hoping this deal will make Cliff Lee want to stay in Seattle beyond next season. The Mariners are shaping up to be real playoff contenders next year and beyond and this extension will make that all the more obvious to Lee. We may see another long-term extension coming soon for Lee, at least I hope so.
Now if only I had the money, I'd be buying myself a Felix jersey right now...
